The Nutritional Value and Essence of Different Milk Formula Substitutes

!±8± The Nutritional Value and Essence of Different Milk Formula Substitutes

Last 50 years have brought about the most substantial progress in improving the composition of mother's milk substitutes ever made in history. In this 21st century, infant formula manufacturers have continued to carry out efforts to develop better breast milk than ever before. Efforts to identify and replicate helpful trace elements, and to conduct important research regarding the addition of immune active ingredients and enzymes that will make formula products even better, are currently under way. But for the main time, here are some already existent formulas which have good nutritive values.

Cow Milk Based Formulas
Characteristics

• Standard formula used when breast feeding is not adopted or is stopped before one year of age.
• Designed to mimic breast milk composition. Breast milk is approximately 60% whey and 40% casein, Cow's milk is 8% casein and 20% whey.
• Formulas contain at least 50% more protein/dL than breast milk (1.5g/100cc).
• Formulas provide appropriate intake of essential nutrients: iron and linoleic acid.
• Carnitine and taurine are added to most standard formulas
• Nucleotides are added to Enfamil and Similac.

Cow-Milk Based Composition
• 20 calories/ounce standard dilution
• Protein is ideally whey-predominantly (similar to breast milk).
• Carbohydrate is lactose (except in Lacto-free Formula).
• Fat is a mixture of vegetable Oil (LCT)
• Approximately 32 ounces of standard formula per day will meet 100% of RDA for vitamins and minerals for term infants.
• If Infants are only fed ready to feed dormula, fluoride supplement of 0.25mg/day is necessary to meet the RDA based on American Academy of Pediatric guidelines.

Available Brands of Cow Milk Based Formulas
• Enfamil with Iron (or low-iron) (Mead Johnsom)
• Similac with Iron (or low-iron) (Ross)
• Gerber
• Good start (Carnation formula with 100% whey as protein).
• Similac PM 60/40 (has decreased calcium, phosphorus and potassium content: Often used in renal patients). (Ross).
• Lactose-free (Mead Johnson) Cow-Milk protein, but lactose-free.

Soy-Based Formulas
Indication for use
• Vegetarians
• IgE mediated reaction to cow's milk protein
• Lactose Intolerance or Galactosemia
• Refeeding after chronic diarrhea (lactose-free)

Characteristics:
• Increased proteins content than cow milk based formulas, since using plant source for protein (2.2g/dL).
• Increased vitamin and mineral content to compensate for mineral antagonists, such as phytates.
• Additional methionine added to formula to ensure a "complete" protein.
• Taurine and cystein added.
• Sweeter taste than cow-milk based and lower cost.

Composition
• 20 calories/ounce standard dilution
• Protein: soy protein with added methionine
• Carbohydrate:Sucrose, corn syrup solids, tapioca starch
• Fat: Blend of vegetable oils

Available Brands of Soy Formulas
• Prosobee
• Isomil
• Isoyalac

Casein Hydrolysate Formulas
Indication for use
• Milk protein or soy protein allergy
• Complicated gastrointestinal disorders
• Colic
• Feeding intolerance to cow milk or soy formulas

Characteristics
• Poor taste and expensive
• Not recommended for long term use in preterm infants due to inadequate vitamin and mineral content and protein source may be difficult to metabolize
• Alimentum is only available in ready to feed.
• Pregestimil is only available as a powder for the sonsumer, but is available in some hospitals as 20 X 24 calorie/oz ready to feed.
• Nutramigen is available in liquid concentrate and powder to the consumer, but is available as ready to feed in the hospital setting.

Available Brands
• Nutramigen
• Pregestimil
• Alimentum

Composition
• Protein: Casein hydrolysate (small peptide considered to be hypoallergenic)
• Carbohydrate: Modified tapioca starch and glucose Oligosaccharides.
• Fat: approximately 50% of fat is MCT oil in Alimantum and pregestimil, and 100% of fat is corn oil in Nutramigen.

Baby Formula

!±8± Baby Formula

When you have a child, you may decide to use baby formula instead of breastfeeding. There are so many different brands on the market today, it makes it confusing to choose the best one for your infant. You will probably receive sample cans in the mail from the major retailers: Similac, Enfamil and Good Start. You might want to try the different kinds to try to figure out which one your little one likes best. Some may cause excessive gas like Good Start did for our daughter. Or, you may find that some cause major spit-up, neither of which are desirable side effects of a feeding.

Some baby formula companies are using targeted marketing to attract customers lately. Similac recently came out with a version which they say is specifically designed for babies with fussiness and gas. Enfamil just came out with a variety that is tailored to the needs of a newborn baby from zero to three months of age. Are these kinds better than just the plain stuff? It has been my experience that the generic is just as good as the major brands at about half the cost. And when you are buying can after can, saving a few dollars on each really adds up.

But sometimes you don't have a choice when it comes to baby formula. Some kids are lactose intolerant and must have soy versus milk. Unfortunately for the parents this means a more expensive type of nutrition for your little one, but you have to do what is best for your child and if it means spending a bit more money, then that is what you must do.

The great thing about baby formula, in my opinion, is that it is so easy and convenient compared to breastfeeding. I tried to breastfeed my son but it didn't work for us and we had to use bottles instead. It was so much easier mixing powder and water and he ate so much faster which gave us more time to snuggle and cuddle afterwards. With my daughter we decided to bottle-feed from the start and I am very happy with our decision and believe she is too.

Baby Bottles and Brands

!±8± Baby Bottles and Brands

Choosing the right brand of baby bottles for your precious little baby may be as simple as getting anything of the shelf or as tedious as listening to tons of advice from your friends and relatives. Nevertheless, it is still up to you to decide what brand of baby bottles you will be using for your baby's feeding.

One of the most popular brands is Avent. Avent is a world-renowned brand that has put a lot of effort into making the safest and most appropriate baby bottles. Bottle Avent not only manufactures a single line of baby bottles; they specialize in baby bottles for pumping moms and older babies.

One of the best features of Avent is the teat or nipple that comes with the bottles. The silicone-made and wide teat imitates the form of the mother's nipple and thus offers the best comfort for your baby.

Avent also boasts of a valve that has a patented anti-vacuum skirt. This prevents air from flowing into your baby's mouth during feeding. Avent's teats come in different types of milk flow for your unique milk-drinker. The nipples are available in slow, medium, and fast flows. If you are unsure as to your baby's preference, you can start with the slow flow teat and if your baby shows frustration, change the teat to a faster flowing one.

Avent is also dishwasher safe and does not get cracked or discolored as easily as other bottles. This means that you would not have to change your baby's feeding bottles as fast as when you use other brands. Plus, Avent have wide mouths which means you can clean it by hand easily without the need for bottle brushes that may not be able to clean the bottle as thoroughly. Bottle Avent is also easy to fill; with its wide mouth, mixing your baby's formula will not cause frustration on your part. Transferring from the pump's bottle to the Avent, or mixing powder and water will not cause spills.

Your baby's bottle Avent will also be very easy to handle come the time that your precious baby starts grasping. The wide shape of the bottle is easier to hold for your baby's developing gross motor skills. Just make sure that you are there to support your baby's attempts to be an independent milk-drinker at the start. For more information of Avent, you can check out their website and other parenting websites for reviews.

Choosing Baby Formula to Supplement Breast Milk

!±8± Choosing Baby Formula to Supplement Breast Milk

For some new mothers, breast feeding is a challenge and in some cases, it can seem to be almost impossible. Stress, illness and previous surgeries are just a few of the reasons that a new mother may under-produce breast milk. If you have recently given birth and discover that, in spite of your best efforts, you are not producing enough breast milk, you should talk to your pediatrician about supplementing your breastfeeding with baby formula. It can be a bitter pill but if, like me, you find that your baby is still hungry at the end of a feeding, deciding to supplement is actually a complete no-brainer.

If your baby is not showing any obvious signs of allergies or sensitivities (gas, diarrhea and the like) you can start with any cow's milk based brand that appeals to you. Remember that all formulas sold in the US are governed by the FDA so you can be sure the nutrition guidelines are similar from brand to brand. Similac, Enfamil, Nestle or (and I wish this had been available when I was supplementing my baby) organic brands like Horizon are all fine places to start. We used powdered formula and bottles with disposable inserts for mixing but you can also buy formula in super convenient ready to use bottles and concentrated liquid formulas that you can mix quickly with water. Obviously, work within your economics and hectic schedule but once your baby is established on formula, you can switch between these different types as you need to.

Once you pick a formula, it won't take long to see if your baby doesn't like it or if it doesn't agree with her system. She will tell you unequivocally with fussing, crying, turning her head away from the bottle, spitting up, vomiting or with some truly awful diapers and gas. Definitely consult your doctor on this but you may need to switch to a formula with low or no lactose or one made with soy milk. In any case, never, ever attempt to feed your baby regular cow's milk or soy milk... they are simply not nutritionally complete enough for a developing baby.

If you can, you should definitely continue to let your baby breastfeed before offering a bottle. For me, it worked something like this: I would make up a bottle first, then sit down with my baby to breast feed. When he lost interest in breastfeeding, I would offer him the bottle and, if he took it right away, I would let him drink as much of that bottle as he wanted. Be aware that sucking formula from a bottle is so much easier than getting it from your breast that your baby might become "lazy" about breastfeeding so always breastfeed first and be absolutely sure they are making an effort before you offer the bottle.

Finally, how do you know if your baby is getting enough formula? Not surprisingly, you will know if you are feeding your baby enough formula by looking for the same signs of satiation that you do with breast feeding: sleepiness, falling off the bottle and what every mother might call slight "intoxication."

In the end, the very best thing you can do is trust your instincts and not worry too much, anyway. After all, we're talking about our babies!
